Ideal AV Home Cinema Room 01 light · Room 02 dark

A home cinema is a large amount of money to spend on somebody else's opinion. We keep two rooms in Normanton — one lit like a living room, one blacked out like a cinema — so you can hear a system in a room before you pay for one in yours.

01The doubt

Nobody should buy a cinema
from a spec sheet.

Their own site names the feeling, so let us name it plainly: the doubt you have before spending this much is not a weakness. It is the correct response to buying blind. Three questions come up again and again — and none of them can be answered by a web page.

  1. Q.01

“Will this work in my room?”

A room has a voice of its own. It lifts some notes and swallows others, and what measured beautifully in a magazine's listening room can arrive in yours sounding like a different system. That is why this business keeps two rooms rather than a showroom — one lit like a living room, one blacked out — so you hear the room as well as the equipment.

  2. Q.02

“What do these speakers actually sound like?”

No paragraph can tell you. One person's “warm” is another person's “muffled”; “fast”, “detailed” and “musical” mean whatever the reviewer needs them to mean. The only test that survives contact with your own ears is your own ears, in a room, with a piece of music or a film you know by heart.

  3. Q.03

“Will I get the benefit of one over another?”

Reviews and awards are opinions, however well informed. They tell you what somebody else heard on the day. They cannot tell you whether the step up is worth it to you. Two options, one seat, seconds apart, is a different kind of answer — and it is the answer a demonstration exists to give.

Buying blind is the expensive way to find out.

Fig. 01The room response

Flat in a lab.
Not in your room.

Put the same speaker in a room and the room joins in: a lift where it agrees, a cancellation where it fights back. The shape below is not a fault — it is normal. It is also why “will this work in my room?” cannot be answered from a page.

02The demonstration rooms

Two rooms,
back to back.

Both are built to behave like a home rather than a shop. One is bright and everyday; the other is blacked out and given over to the picture. Same equipment, different room — and that difference is the whole reason to visit.

Room 01

The light room

The everyday sitting room: curtains open, lamps on, plenty of ambient light in the room. It is the harder test of a projector and a screen, and the one most people actually live with.

“Will it still look like this with the lamps on?”

Room 02

The dark room

Light-controlled and built for a dedicated cinema, where the picture is the only thing in the room and the black level has nowhere to hide. It is the room the equipment was really bought for.

“What does it do when nothing else is on?”

The point is not either room on its own. It is walking from one into the other and hearing what the room was doing all along.

03The rack

A system,
not a shopping list.

Picture, sound and the processing in between have to agree with each other. These are the shelves the system is built from — and every one of them is installed, not just sold.

  1. 01 Projectors The light source the whole picture depends on.
  2. 02 Projector screens The surface that decides what reaches your eye.
  3. 03 Speakers Left, centre, right and surround — the system's voice.
  4. 04 Subwoofers The part your room argues with most.
  5. 05 AV receivers Switching, processing and the first amplifier in the chain.
  6. 06 Power amplifiers Current for speakers that ask for more than a receiver gives.
  7. 07 Video processors Tone mapping and scaling, for projectors that need the help.
  8. 08 Blu-ray players Physical media, played properly.
  9. 09 Accessories Cable, mounts and the small parts that finish a room.

Buying one box at a time is how systems end up disagreeing. The demonstration is where the shortlist gets shorter — often to nothing like the one you arrived with.

04How a project runs

Four steps.
The second one
is the point.

Retail and custom installation from the same people, in the same rooms. Nothing gets ordered before you have heard what you are ordering.

  1. 01

    Talk

Ring or email. Describe the room, what you watch and listen to, and what is in there now. It is a conversation, not a quote generator.

  2. 02

    Listen

Come to Normanton and sit in both rooms. Bring a disc or a track you know by heart — the demonstration is only useful if it is your material.

  3. 03

    Specify

The system is agreed around what you heard in the room, not around an award list. If the cheaper option is the better one on the day, that is worth knowing before anything is ordered.

  4. 04

    Install

The installation side of the business takes it from there — screen, projector, speakers, rack — set up as one system rather than a pile of boxes.

No two rooms are the same size and no two projects take the same work, so we will tell you what yours involves before anything is ordered — not after.

The ex-demo

Equipment that has done its time in the rooms, and part-exchange that has come back in. It changes as the rooms change, so the clearance page — not this one — is the live list.

Start with
a visit.

The rooms exist for this. Ring first so they are ready for you, tell us what you are trying to solve, and bring something you know. A demonstration is the one part of the buying process that cannot be rushed — or done from a page.

Ring before you set off, so the rooms are ready for you.
